It was incorporated as Mattabeseck, its original Native American name. Wesleyan University was established in 1831 and quickly became one of the United States′ leading liberal arts institutions. Middletown also established the state′s first public high school in 1841, enrolling students from ages nine to sixteen.
Middletown is home to Joey Logano, NASCAR driver for the Joe Gibbs Racing Team, and Joss Whedon, Wesleyan graduate and creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The town is also known for its unique downtown dining and shopping districts as well as the Art Displays at the Russel Library.
